this boy has always been a tad vain (no idea where he gets that from. ahem. at least there's nothing wrong with his self esteem!)
but suddenly he's been smiling and posing for the camera.
and it's awesome.

(fingers crossed that he'll be this cooperative sunday when we get some family pictures taken. here's hoping, heather!)

a spring snow day.

last week we got a completely unexpected and strange 4 inches of snow.
it was awesome.
everyone we know was whining and complaining about it being spring and where's the sun, blah blah blah - but for us? any day is a good day for a snow day. (these are the same people that whine when it rains too much, when its too hot, when its too cold...oregonians are fickle people.)
we were outside playing by 7:30.
no time for breakfast when there's 4 inches of snow outside!
i think cash spent a good 6 hours total out playing in it that day - we really got our money's worth out of that snow suit.
it was almost completely gone by the next morning but it was fun while it lasted!

the morning.

cash is still quite enamored with his kitty.
she is still tolerant of him.
most mornings they can be found like this: her gazing out the window while pretending to ignore him yet still never moving farther than a few feet away; him pretending to ignore her while watching cartoons yet whining if she does decide to leave the room.
it's pretty sweet.

cash's groove.

cash doing his best braveheart impersonation.

cash loves to dance. not a day goes by that he doesn't take at least 10 minutes to shake his little groove thang.
i started turning the radio on in his room for him while he's playing to help encourage that energy-using urge to dance and started to notice that he definitely shows preference to certain songs.
if its got a good beat, he's in.
but he also loves songs he can sing to and, frequently, does. (adele's rolling in the deep is a fave. also anything by maroon 5 - this boy is taking advantage of that falsetto.)
so the other day i put together a little playlist of his top favorites.
it's pretty much a given that if we get in the car, this is what we're jamming to:
-- MJ's Bad
-- Foster the People's Pumped up Kicks
-- Colbie Caillat's Brighter than the Sun
-- Jason Mraz's I'm Yours
-- Casey Weston's Black Horse and a Cherry Tree
-- Michael Franti's Say Hey
-- Beyonce's Single Ladies (yes, I'm serious. he LOVES this one.)
-- Adele's Rolling in the Deep
-- Maroon 5's Moves like Jagger
i'm getting a little tired of Bad, but it's a far cry better than ol' mcdonald or something else equally lame.
my kid is so cool sometimes.

the puppy.

last week cash and i came upon a lost puppy on the side of the road.
being the sucker for animals that i am, i picked him up, hoping that he was the puppy that i had seen 'lost dog' posters for down the road.
he wasn't.
and that's about the time that i learned an important lesson: the pregnant one cannot, under any circumstances, take a lost puppy to dog control. because she will A.) consider turning the car around about a million times in the 10 minute drive. B.) will sob uncontrollably the whole drive home because she feels like a dog abandoner. and C.) spend the rest of the day on the verge of tears over a puppy that 5 hours before she didn't even know existed.
it was a rough day.
and it really was the sweetest little dog.
so patient with cash. so loving.
nate even admitted later that he was trying to get me to find a home for him ourselves knowing that if i had to keep him overnight, i'd probably just want to end up keeping him forever (which is totally true.)
in short - no more rescuing stray dogs for me.

the crawfords in march.

-- nate received (won? earned? i don't know) an apprenticeship at his job a few weeks back, which means yet another new schedule we'll need to get used to. he'll be going to school for a couple of years, working and generally being completely useless for help around the house. i'm still working on coming to grips with that. but it's a fantastic opportunity for us and our family and i couldn't be more proud. i completely reserve the right to take all that back when i'm stuck at home with an almost 4 year old and a newborn and want to tear my hair out, however.

-- cash's new favorite saying is, "It's ok. It's ok." he says it typically after he's made a mess of some sort and is working at getting it cleaned up. which makes it that much more sweet. my favorite is when he's at the table coloring and gets marker on the table - he'll instantly start saying, "It's ok, it's ok," and then quickly cover up the marks with his paper. something tells me he's going to be a 'sweep the dirt under the rug instead of into the dustpan' kind of kid.

-- just hit 23 weeks today. nothing is really new except for some glorious heartburn. that and a kid that likes to party all night long, making sleeping a very interesting experience. nate commented the other night that he could feel him kicking and moving around in the middle of the night and marveled at how i could possibly sleep through all that. not easy, my friend.

-- i've entered slightly manic cleaning mode and found myself scrubbing the walls in the hallway for no apparent reason the other morning. a fruit-less effort, considering the people i live with.

-- speaking of, the cat and dog are doing pretty good at getting along. they are typical girls though - piper will like pippen only on days where pippen thinks the dog is a nuisance. and pippen only likes piper on days that piper thinks all cats are evil. but they're learning to co-exist somewhat peacefully.

-- also, the cat has ceased peeing on cash's bed. she had that disgusting little habit the first week or so that she was here. we think she was just staking her territory on cash but who knows - maybe she was just being an asshole. either way, she apparently has decided that she enjoys being fed and loved on and has stopped her wayward peeing. she also has claimed the changing table as her own personal bed and sleeps there all day. she's in for a rude awakening here in a few months.

-- i've discovered that mowing the lawn at a breakneck pace in an attempt to get as much done as possible will result in my feeling like i've pulled every muscle in my body. oops. still, the yard looks so pretty now! parts of it, that is.  i'm not wonder woman.

-- if i'm cooking meat for dinner, i've found that i have to cook it in the morning otherwise the smell will render me completely sick for the rest of the evening. somehow the smell of pork chops isn't so offensive at 11 o'clock in the morning.

-- and we're gearing up for a busy april; maternity shoot, easter, throwing a baby shower (not for me,) nate starts school, taking a quick weekend trip to washington....i'm getting exhausted just thinking about it. i'm stalking up on cadbury mini eggs to get me through. :)

deer friends.

we've been enjoying some early morning deer visitors these last few weeks.
i've seen countless deer in my life time but it still never gets old.
cash keeps getting confused and calling them cows.
pretty much any large, 4 legged creature is a cow to him.
he can't help it - he likes cows.

cash in march.

-- says 'scuse me' every time he burps or farts. it's basically the cutest thing in the world and i hope he never grows out of it (ha! good luck, me.) he also says it for nate too - cash is teaching him a thing or two about manners!

-- is really, truly taking to his pre-school learnin.' it seems like it happened overnight, but all of the sudden he's pointing out his letters, practicing the sounds they make, making a serious effort to listen and repeat new words, attempting to color inside the lines. it's awesome. my favorite is when he plays with this toy that is supposed to teach him the sounds letters make - every time he gets to B, he says B says BUCK.

-- hasn't gotten any farther on the whole potty training thing. he does typically ask to be 'chinged' any time he is even the slightest bit wet. progress.

-- was beside himself with happiness when we spent the weekend at the coast. 'beach' was one of the first words he ever learned. i think it's love.

-- he's sleeping in his bed like a pro. occasionally he still ends up in our bed but for the most part i don't see him until 6:45. on the dot, i might add. his internal clock is incredibly accurate.

-- given the choice, he'll wear pajamas all day long. especially his thomas the train jammies. he'd wear that shirt every day if i didn't insist on washing it.

-- i can't wear flower clips in my hair without him taking them out and wearing them himself. nate just rolls his eyes, but i think its hilarious.

-- he sings to himself, constantly, all day long. mostly variations of the ABC's, but often little tunes he's completely made up.

-- he loves his kitty and will pick her up and carry her around the house. she is less thrilled with him but tolerates it.

he's pretty swell.

the artist.

cash recently re-discovered watercolor paints and he's been a bit obsessed.
he makes at least 2 new creations a day it seems.
pretty soon i'm going to be able to wallpaper the house with them.
which is just fine with me - i love how much he loves art.

the beach, baby.

your first official trip to the beach.
you kicked harder and harder the closer we got to the water.
you kept me awake at night flipping and kicking around. between you and your brother, i got zero sleep.
you started kicking hard enough for me to actually see my stomach move. it's incredibly neat and only a little creepy.
i was constantly, ravenously hungry - i even managed to eat hamburger meat without hurling.
i bought you your first little outfit, despite having been blessed with lots of hand me downs from your brother and friends.
we can't wait to meet you, my sweet boy.

evil genius.

we've had some surprise snowfall in the last few days (it's been awesome) and cash has been spending as much time as possible playing in it.
the other day he went out super early in the morning, while i was still drinking my coffee.
lately, when he goes outside, he comes in periodically to give me little treasures of sticks and rocks.
so when i heard the back door open that morning, i figured he had found something fun to show me.
then he started saying, 'uh oh! uh oh!' which typically means he's lost a boot or something like that.
so i had to the kitchen, looking for a place to set my coffee, when SPLAT! he nailed me right in the neck with a snowball.
it was so devious, so sneaky, so GENIUS that all i could do was laugh.
man, i love that boy.
